«Who speaks in the Hymns of Callimachus, to whom, when and where? Or in other words: to what extent can we establish the identity of the voices speaking in these poems? Questions such as these have frequently been asked about Greek lyric poetry, but in the case of Callimachus’ Hymns they have received relatively little attention. However, similar problems arise from Callimachus’ Hymns as from the poems of the lyricists (and Pindar in particular), problems of the poet’s persona and the relationship between biographical and literary I, of the difference between ‘bardic’ and ‘choral’ I, and of the nature and coherence of these I’s.»
