«This spark developed within a short time into the conception of a grand encyclopedic project (from 387), which Augustine intended to consist of books on each of the liberal arts, among them De musica. But how does De musica, which Augustine completed only a few years later, after his return from Milan to Africa, relate to the encyclopedic ideas that originated in his early thought in Cassiciacum? The aim of the present study is to investigate this matter more closely.»
