«The title essay, by Dr. Maren-Sofie Røstvig, discusses an esoteric technique of composition popular among Renaissance Neoplatonists, who insisted that the artist, like God, should devise an abstract numerical pattern in his mind before proceeding to the actual work of creation. The point of the pattern is that the numbers selected to govern the division into books and chapters, or into stanzas and cantos, should express the contents. Thus a lyric about the Trinity ought to consist of Three three-line stanzas rhyming aaa.»
